A New Phase for the German Solar Market
Germany added more than 16.4 GWdc of new solar capacity in 2025, pushing total installed PV capacity above 117 GWdc and supplying around 15% of national electricity demand. Yet the market is increasingly shifting beyond pure capacity growth toward questions of integration, flexibility, and system optimisation within a decentralised energy landscape. The growing importance of the commercial & industrial segment — which accounted for roughly 5.6 GWdc, or one-third of new installations — highlights this transition, as projects increasingly combine PV with storage, smart metering, load management, and digital energy services. At the same time, emerging energy-sharing frameworks under § 42c EnWG and evolving utility business models point toward a future in which energy suppliers act not only as retailers, but as coordinators of regional, digitally integrated energy ecosystems.
