The termination of net metering in the Netherlands is the primary catalyst for a significant acceleration in energy storage system adoption, transitioning from solar-only installations.
  2. C&I Leads, Residential Follows
Initially, the C&I sector is experiencing a rapid uptake in storage solutions, with expectations for the residential segment to follow suit by the end of the current year.
  3. Certification as a Market Differentiator
SolaX Power emphasizes full compliance with Dutch and European regulations, differentiating itself from new market entrants who may lack necessary certifications for their products.
  4. Scaling Towards Megawatt Solutions
Beyond 2026, SolaX Power projects a market shift from smaller C&I cabinets to larger, megawatt-hour scale storage solutions, including 10-foot containerized systems.

Dutch Energy Storage Market Sees Rapid Expansion

The energy storage market in the Netherlands is undergoing a significant transformation, largely spurred by the conclusion of net metering regulations. Mark Poutsma of SolaX Power notes a substantial increase in demand for storage systems, shifting the focus from solar-only installations to integrated energy solutions. This growth is initially concentrated within the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector, which is experiencing a considerable surge in adoption. Projections indicate that the residential sector will also see substantial movement into storage systems towards the end of the current year. This trend aligns with EUPD research findings, confirming the anticipated growth trajectory across different market segments as consumers and businesses adapt to the new energy landscape.

"Because of the ending of the net metering in the Netherlands, we see a big move into the storage system. So we see a big jump with big numbers and especially in C&I at this moment." Poutsma · 00:41

SolaX Power's Focus on Compliance and Scalable Solutions

Amidst the influx of new entrants into the European and Dutch energy markets, SolaX Power is strategically prioritizing compliance and certification. Poutsma highlights that many newcomers lack the necessary certifications required by European and specific Dutch regulations. In response, SolaX Power works closely with Dutch installers to ensure every product meets all required certifications, maintaining full approval in the market. Looking beyond 2026, SolaX Power anticipates a clear progression towards larger storage capacities. The market is expected to evolve from current C&I cabinet solutions, typically around 200-600 kilowatt-hours, to megawatt-scale systems. The company is already developing and deploying solutions like 10-foot containers capable of storing one megawatt-hour, indicating a clear trajectory towards even larger, utility-scale applications.

"Solax is listening quite a lot to Dutch installers and prepare each and every machine, especially for all the certifications. And we are fully approved and in line with all the certifications of what is needed in the EU and the Dutch market." Poutsma · 01:32

Hello and welcome from Solar Solutions Amsterdam. My name is Daniel Fuchs. I'm the CCO at EUPD Group, and it's my pleasure to have with me my interview partner, Marc Poutsma, country director at Solax Power, here with me today. Welcome here. Thank you. Marc, how do you see the market, in particular, the energy storage market, developing in the Netherlands? So the development in the Netherlands is last year and the previous years, we are doing a lot of solar. And because of the ending of the net metering in the Netherlands, we see a big move into the storage system. So we see a big jump with big numbers and especially in C&I at this moment. By the end of this year, we are seeing a lot of movement or expect a lot of movement into the storage system for the residential area. Okay. Yeah. This is what we echo from EUPD research out of our research activities. When we talk more on the technology side now. So what does Solax Power have on offer to exactly serve these great developments in 2026? So what we see over actually the last year, that there are a lot of newcomers to the market, what is not totally not certified to the European market, but also not approved by the Dutch regulations. So Solax is listening quite a lot to Dutch installers and prepare each and every machine, especially for all the certifications. And we are fully approved and in line with all the certifications of what is needed in the EU and the Dutch market. Okay. Yeah. This is great that you hear what the customers, the market intermediaries really want to have tailor-made solutions for them. Yeah. When we look into the future beyond 2026, how are your expectations? So we see a big movement from C&I smaller cabinets, so 200 and 61 kilowatt hour into megawatt solutions. So we are standing in front of a 10-foot container with one megawatt hour storage solutions. But also we are seeing a movement into even bigger systems. So yeah, bigger. Great. Yeah. Thank you very much for your local insights for this interview here today. And thank you to Solax Power also for driving the energy transition with such a great commitment. Thank you, Marc. Thank you, Daniel.

Frequently asked questions

The primary driver for the growth of energy storage in the Netherlands is the ending of net metering regulations. This change incentivizes consumers and businesses to store excess solar energy rather than feeding it back into the grid, leading to increased demand for storage systems.

Currently, the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector is experiencing the most significant growth in energy storage system adoption. SolaX Power expects that the residential sector will also see a strong increase in storage system uptake by the end of the current year.

SolaX Power actively listens to Dutch installers and ensures that every machine is prepared with all necessary certifications. The company is fully approved and in line with all required certifications for both the European Union and the specific Dutch market regulations.

Beyond 2026, SolaX Power anticipates a significant shift towards larger-scale storage solutions. They foresee a movement from smaller C&I cabinets (200-600 kWh) to megawatt-hour solutions, including 10-foot containers with 1 MWh storage capacity, and potentially even bigger systems.

SolaX Power notes that a significant challenge is the entry of many newcomers to the market whose products are not fully certified to European standards or approved by specific Dutch regulations. This creates a need for established players like SolaX Power to emphasize compliance and certification.
